ELECSYS Supports Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 as Project Advances

June 25, 2026

ELECSYS is proud to support the STV-WSP team on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 project, one of New York City’s most important transit expansion programs. The project will extend Q Line service north from 96th Street to East Harlem and Harlem, bringing new subway access to communities that have long awaited improved transit connectivity.

Phase 2 builds on the successful opening of Second Avenue Subway Phase 1, and will create three new ADA-accessible stations, located at 106th Street, 116th Street, and 125th Street. The future 125th Street station will provide important connections to the Lexington Avenue subway lines, Metro-North Railroad, and M60 Select Bus Service, strengthening access across Manhattan and the broader regional transit network.

The program is significant not only because of its size, but because of what it will deliver for riders and the surrounding community. Once complete, Phase 2 will provide a one-seat ride from East Harlem to the Upper East Side, West Midtown, and Coney Island; reduce crowding on the Lexington Avenue Line; improve service reliability; and shorten commute times for many riders. It will also reconnect East Harlem with subway service along Second Avenue, where elevated rail service ended more than 80 years ago.

As a subconsultant to STV and WSP joint venture, Phase 2 Partnership, ELECSYS is contributing specialized engineering support for critical building systems and transit infrastructure elements. ELECSYS’s role includes support for mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems-related design and coordination, associated with stations, tunnels, ancillary facilities, and supporting infrastructure. The scale of the project requires close coordination across many disciplines, contracts, agencies, stakeholders, and community interfaces.

This work draws on ELECSYS’s experience with MTA Construction & Development and New York City Transit projects, including active transit environments, complex station systems, utility coordination, constructability, and construction-phase engineering support.

Recently, ELECSYS team members attended the Phase 2 Partnership Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 All-Hands Meeting at WSP’s office. The meeting brought together project partners to review progress, discuss coordination, and align on upcoming work as the program continues moving through design and construction. For ELECSYS, the meeting was an opportunity to collaborate directly with STV, WSP, and other team members supporting this landmark investment in New York City’s transit future.

“As engineers, it is rewarding to contribute to a project that people will utilize every day, for generations. Supporting Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 gives our team the opportunity to apply our technical expertise in designing infrastructure that directly improves access, reliability, and quality of life for the community.” – Eldo James, Managing Partner

With major construction activities already underway, Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 represents a generational investment in mobility, accessibility, and community connectivity. ELECSYS is honored to contribute to the STV-WSP team and to support the technical coordination required to deliver a modern, reliable, and resilient subway extension for New Yorkers.
