Carnegie Hall is one of New York City’s most iconic cultural institutions, welcoming performers and audiences from around the world. To support comfort, safety, and a first-class experience—while advancing energy-efficiency goals—the Carnegie Hall Corporation undertook a targeted upgrade to the air handling unit (AHU) reheat coils serving the main performance hall and associated support spaces at 881 Seventh Avenue in Manhattan.
ELECSYS provided mechanical, electrical, and controls engineering support for this specialized HVAC retrofit in a historic, heavily used venue where downtime is limited and reliability is essential. The work focused on upgrading existing reheat coils to improve temperature and humidity control, enhance system performance, and extend the useful life of the existing equipment.
As a design–build subconsultant, ELECSYS developed design drawings and technical criteria for new reheat coils, associated piping and valving, and the electrical power and controls needed to support the upgraded equipment. The team coordinated closely with the design–build contractor and Carnegie Hall stakeholders to verify existing conditions, align sequences of operation, and integrate the retrofit with the building’s existing automation system.
Because the work occurred in an active, high-profile performance environment, staging and constructability were central to delivery. ELECSYS supported site visits and field verification tied to performance schedules, helping define installation sequencing and outage windows that minimized disruption to rehearsals, events, and day-to-day operations.
By optimizing the reheat portion of the AHU system—rather than replacing entire units—the project improved comfort and humidity stability in a cost-effective, low-disruption way, supporting both patron experience and the protection of sensitive instruments and finishes.
