The Installation and Upgrade of Emergency Alarm Systems contract is a systemwide design–build program to modernize emergency alarm infrastructure across the NYCT network. Under this contract, the design–build team is replacing aging equipment and expanding coverage at multiple yards, tunnels, and right-of-way locations to improve incident response, communications, and overall passenger and worker safety.

ELECSYS serves as electrical and systems design subconsultant, working closely with the prime contractor, MTA C&D, and NYCT to upgrade critical life-safety systems while maintaining 24/7 service. The scope includes new emergency alarm panels and enclosures; power distribution to support the upgraded systems; extensive conduit and cabling; and integration with existing communications, SCADA, and central monitoring platforms. Because the work touches multiple operating facilities, constructability and phasing are central to the program. ELECSYS helps develop design packages that can be installed in tightly sequenced outages, coordinating with operations staff to minimize service disruptions. Designs address not only code requirements and agency standards but also maintainability for field crews, with clear labeling, accessible terminations, and robust environmental protection in challenging tunnel and yard environments.

The upgraded systems will provide more reliable alarm signaling, clearer information to operations staff, and better visibility into the status of devices in the field. For the MTA C&D and NYCT, the program represents a major step toward modernizing critical safety infrastructure and standardizing equipment across the network. For ELECSYS, it is an opportunity to apply deep transit and systems-integration experience on a program that directly supports worker and passenger safety.
