Paerdegat and Avenue U Pumping Stations Upgrades

Resilient Power and Controls for Two Brooklyn Pump Stations

Client:

New York City Department of Environmental Protection

Location:

Brooklyn, NY

Completion Date:

2026

The Paerdegat and Avenue U Pumping Stations are essential links in New York City’s wastewater and stormwater network, serving dense Brooklyn neighborhoods and protecting nearby waterways during major storms. As part of a multi-year state-of-good-repair and resiliency program, the NYC DEP is undertaking comprehensive upgrades to modernize both stations and prepare them for future operating demands.

ELECSYS is providing full electrical and instrumentation and controls engineering design services for this effort. The scope includes complete replacement of the Con Edison electric utility services, incoming service equipment, emergency generator systems, motor control centers, distribution transformers and panelboards, lighting and fire alarm systems, SCADA and telemetry equipment, and all field instrumentation and controls devices. Working within tight urban sites and existing structures, ELECSYS is designing resilient, code-compliant systems that maintain pumping capacity during construction while significantly improving long-term reliability and maintainability.

The design is being delivered under a design–bid–build model in close collaboration with the prime consultant and NYC DEP. ELECSYS is helping develop phasing and interim-power strategies, coordinate with mechanical and civil upgrades, and align electrical and controls design with current agency standards and future resiliency goals. When complete, the upgraded stations will provide more robust protection for surrounding communities and waterways, reducing the risk of service disruptions, improving operational flexibility, and supporting the City’s broader wastewater resiliency initiatives.
