Queens Village Bus Depot is one of NYCT’s key facilities serving Southeast Queens and a cornerstone of MTA C&D’s transition to a zero-emission bus fleet. Under Phase 2 of the citywide charging-infrastructure program, the depot is being equipped with high-power overhead pantograph chargers and major electrical distribution upgrades so buses can charge efficiently during layovers and overnight—without disrupting daily operations.
Across the program, MTA C&D and the NYPA are building more than 200 additional overhead pantograph chargers system-wide. At Queens Village, the improvements will support approximately 50 chargers—about 1.5 MW of connected load—providing capacity for a growing battery-electric fleet.
ELECSYS serves as an electrical and systems engineering subconsultant, supporting the design–build team from early design through construction. Our role includes preparing design documentation for charger integration and power-distribution modifications, verifying existing conditions, and reconciling as-built records to establish a reliable baseline for upgrades.
ELECSYS develops one-line diagrams and panel schedules, sizes and routes feeders, and provides grounding and bonding details that tie new charging equipment into the depot’s electrical backbone. The team also prepares charger interface drawings, coordinates with communications and charge-management systems, and supports short-circuit and coordination reviews to confirm the upgraded system can safely accommodate new loads.
During construction, ELECSYS supports submittal and RFI review, field walk-throughs, cutover planning, and commissioning coordination to help ensure the chargers and associated controls perform as intended and align with day-to-day depot operations.
By pairing transit power experience with a practical understanding of depot operations, ELECSYS is helping deliver an electric-bus hub that is robust, flexible, and ready for future fleet growth.
